Vytautas Magnus University

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) is a public research university in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Vytautas Magnus University was founded on February 16, 1922, as the Lithuanian University. It was the first university in independent Lithuania and was located in Kaunas, the temporary capital of the country. The university was named after Vytautas the Great, the Grand Duke of Lithuania who ruled from 1392 to 1430.

The university offered a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. It also had a strong emphasis on research.

In 1930, the university was renamed Vytautas Magnus University. This was done in honor of Vytautas the Great, who was a patron of learning and culture.

The university was closed by the Soviet Union in 1950. However, it was re-established in 1989 after the restoration of Lithuanian independence.

In the early years after its re-establishment, VMU focused on rebuilding its academic programs and infrastructure. The university also began to develop international partnerships.
