University of Benghazi (UoB) is a public university in Benghazi, Libya.
The University of Benghazi (UoB) is the oldest and most prestigious university in Libya. It was founded as the University of Libya on December 15, 1955, just months after the country gained independence from Italy. The university was established in Benghazi, the country's second-largest city, and was initially housed in the former royal palace, Al Manar. The UoB's first faculty was the Faculty of Literature, which opened its doors in 1956. The university gradually expanded over the following years, adding new faculties and departments. In 1968, construction began on a new campus for the university in the Garyounis district of Benghazi. The new campus was officially opened in 1973.
In 1976, the University of Libya was divided into two separate institutions: the University of Tripoli, located in the capital city, and the University of Benghazi. The University of Benghazi continued to grow in the years that followed, and by the 1980s, it had become one of the largest universities in Africa. The university was renamed Garyounis University in 1984, but it reverted to its original name, the University of Benghazi, in 2011. The university has played a significant role in Libyan society, producing many of the country's leaders, educators, and professionals. The university is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education that will prepare them for successful careers. The UoB also plays an important role in the community, providing outreach programs and services to the people of Benghazi.
