In 1851, amidst the fledgling nation of Liberia, a seed of higher education was planted. Authorized by the newly independent government, Liberia College was born. It wasn't until 1862 that the seed broke ground, sprouting into a modest institution in the capital city of Monrovia. Early years were marked by struggle, with funding coming primarily from American organizations like the New York Colonization Society. Yet, dedicated faculty and determined students laid the foundation for its future as a beacon of learning.

The turn of the 20th century saw Liberia College steadily grow. Its curriculum expanded, encompassing law, medicine, and theology alongside the traditional liberal arts.
