American University of Beirut

American University of Beirut (AUB) is a private, non-sectarian, and independent university chartered in New York with its campus in Beirut, Lebanon.

The history of the American University of Beirut (AUB) dates back to 1862, when American missionaries in Lebanon and Syria proposed to establish a college of higher learning that would include medical training. Dr. Daniel Bliss was appointed to lead the project, and he traveled to the United States and England to raise money for the new college.

On April 24, 1863, the State of New York granted a charter for the Syrian Protestant College. The college opened its doors on December 3, 1866, with a class of 16 students.

In the early years, the college focused on liberal arts education and medical training. In 1871, a school of pharmacy was added, and in 1905, a school of nursing and a hospital were established.

In the early 20th century, the college began to expand its academic offerings. In 1920, it was renamed the American University of Beirut.

AUB has faced its share of challenges over the years. During the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the campus was severely damaged. However, the university remained open and continued to educate its students.

In 2006, AUB was again damaged during the war between Lebanon and Israel. However, the university quickly rebuilt and reopened its doors.

Today, AUB is one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East and North Africa. It is a leading research university with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. AUB continues to play an important role in the development of Lebanon and the region.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, American University of Beirut is positioned as the #226 top university in the world, which makes it the #1 top university in Lebanon.
