University of Latvia

University of Latvia (UL) is a public research university located in Riga, Latvia.

The University of Latvia (UL) was founded on September 28, 1919, on the basis of the former Riga Polytechnic (founded in 1862). The first rector of the university was chemist Paul Walden.

The establishment of UL was a defining moment in the history of Latvia, as it marked the country's commitment to higher education and research. In 1990, Latvia regained its independence, and UL was renamed the University of Latvia. The university began to transition to a market-based economy and to develop closer ties with Western universities.
