Satbayev University

Satbayev University, or officially the Kazakh National Technical University named after Kanysh Satpayev, is a technical university located in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Satbayev University was founded in 1934 as the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute. The institute was established to meet the growing demand for engineers and scientists in the rapidly developing mining and metallurgical industries of Kazakhstan.

In the early years, the institute offered a limited number of programs in mining and metallurgy. However, over time, the institute's curriculum expanded to include a wide range of engineering, science, and technology programs.

In 1978, the institute was recognized as one of the leading higher educational institutions of the Soviet Union. In 1990, the institute was renamed the Kazakh National Technical University.

In 2014, the university was awarded the status of a National Research University. In 2017, the university was renamed Satbayev University in honor of Kanysh Satpayev, the father of Kazakh geology.

Today, Satbayev University is one of the leading technical universities in Kazakhstan. Satbayev University has played a significant role in the development of Kazakhstan's economy and society. The university has trained thousands of engineers and scientists who have made significant contributions to the country's mining, metallurgical, energy, and other industries.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Satbayev University is positioned as the #405 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Kazakhstan. The university's global rank is improved by 76 points from last year.
