Its history can be traced back to 1724, when the Kaitokudō, a school for samurai and merchants, was founded in Osaka. In 1838, the Tekijuku, a school for the study of Western sciences, was also founded in Osaka. In 1931, the Kaitokudō and the Tekijuku merged to form Osaka University.
