University of Pavia

University of Pavia dates back to 1361 and is one of the earliest higher education institutions known in the world, and has an important role in European educational history.

The University is located in Pavia, Lombardy, Italy and was founded under the auspices of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Throughout the centuries, numerous students attended Pavia claiming a title to academic excellence, ultimately becoming a center for research and learning in its field. During its early years, the University of Pavia was focused on the classical disciplines of law, medicine, and philosophy, studies that were aligned with medieval learning. During the Renaissance, influenced by a cultural revival across Europe, the university thrived. During this period, new libraries and research centers opened, and the self-asserted name of the university as an educational leader became more justified, having gained elite faculty members known for their contributions to science, the arts, and the humanities.

In the contemporary period, the University of Pavia has broadened its scope in the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences by adding new subjects, new technologies in teaching, and new research facilities, ensuring that it remains a leader in higher education.At present, the university has 18 departments and various interdisciplinary, and multi-disciplinary research institutes, and an abundance of possibilities for partnerships and innovation. The University is also widely recognized for its Collegiate System which places a strong emphasis on students’ experience and provides for the needs of students through 20 colleges that offer unique educational and cultural opportunities.
