University of Basrah is a public university located in the city of Basra, Iraq.
In 1964, the University of Basrah was established as a branch of the University of Baghdad to address the educational needs of southern Iraq. Initially, it had four faculties: Arts, Science, Engineering, and Law. Later that same year, the University of Basrah gained independence, marking the start of its journey as a leading educational institution in Iraq.
The University of Basrah gained recognition for its strong research focus, establishing centers dedicated to marine sciences, polymer studies, Arabian Gulf studies, date palm research, and educational development.
The university faced significant challenges during the Saddam Hussein regime and the 2003 Iraq War. Student activism and protests were common, and the war caused substantial damage to the campus.
However, the university demonstrated remarkable resilience. It actively participated in its own reconstruction and emerged from these difficult times as a thriving center of learning once again.
