The University of Baghdad (UOB) is a public research university in Baghdad, Iraq. It is the largest university in Iraq and the tenth largest university in the Arab world.
The history of the University of Baghdad can be traced back to the 11th century, when the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir founded the Mustansiriya madrasa in 1227. The madrasa was one of the oldest universities in the world and was known for its excellence in teaching and research.
In the early 20th century, the Iraqi government began to establish modern educational institutions. In 1908, the College of Law was founded, followed by the College of Medicine in 1927 and the College of Engineering in 1936.
In 1957, the Iraqi government decided to amalgamate these existing institutions into a single university. The University of Baghdad was officially founded on 1 October 1957.
The university's early years were marked by rapid growth. In the 1960s, the university expanded its campus and established new colleges, including the College of Arts and the College of Science. The university also attracted a number of renowned international scholars to its faculty.
The university's growth was interrupted by the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) and the Gulf War (1991). However, the university has since recovered and is now one of the leading universities in Iraq and the Arab world.
The University of Baghdad has played a significant role in the development of Iraq. It has produced many of Iraq's leading academics, scientists, and professionals. The university has also been a center for intellectual and cultural activity in Iraq.
