Tabriz University

Tabriz University, which exists as a major public research university, operates from the ancient Tabriz city that serves as the administrative center for East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran. The university functions as a regional academic center which provides educational resources and research capabilities since it stands as the second oldest institution of higher learning in Iran. The university occupies one of the most beautiful campuses in Iran which extends over 600 hectares of land that contains both vast green areas and contemporary building systems. The university operates through its educational mission which uses the motto "Refinement and Education" to nurture academic research work together with character growth while serving as a primary university which develops higher education systems throughout nearby regions.

The university began to develop as an educational institution during the time period which followed World War II after it opened its doors to students in 1947. The local government created the University of Azarabadegan educational institution after their efforts to establish a higher education facility in Azerbaijan. The institution started as a medical and agricultural school but later developed to offer programs in both natural sciences and humanities studies. The institution received its new name as University of Tabriz after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 took place. The organization has maintained its role as a main educational institution in Iran while serving as a center for international scientific research throughout its different organizational transformations which started in the 1980s when it separated its medical programs from its main operations.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Tabriz University is positioned as the #578 top university in the world, which makes it the #6 top university in Iran. The university's global rank decreased by 26 points from last year.
