Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences is one of the three medical universities in Tehran, the capital of Iran. It is also the second largest medical university in Iran.

The history of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBUMS) dates back to 1961, when the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry were established. At the time, the schools were part of Melli University (the Iranian National University). In 1986, as part of an academic reform, the medical schools were separated from the main universities and became independent institutions. The Schools of Medicine and Dentistry of Melli University were merged with a number of other treatment and educational units and organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Health to form Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.

SBUMS was named after Dr. Mohammad Beheshti, a prominent Iranian politician and religious scholar who was assassinated in 1981. Dr. Beheshti was a strong supporter of education and research, and he played a key role in the development of medical education in Iran.
