University of Indonesia (UI) is a public university in Depok, West Java and Salemba, Jakarta, Indonesia. It is one of the oldest tertiary-level educational institutions in Indonesia, and is generally considered one of the most prestigious universities in the country.

The history of the University of Indonesia (UI) can be traced back to 1849, when the School of Medicine was founded in Batavia (now Jakarta) by the Dutch colonial government. The school was initially intended to train indigenous doctors to serve in the colonial army and civil service. However, it soon became a center for intellectual and nationalist thought.

In 1902, the School of Law was founded, followed by the School of Engineering in 1920. In 1925, these three schools were merged to form the Universiteit van Indonesië (University of Indonesia). The university was officially opened on August 2, 1925 by the Dutch Governor-General of the Netherlands Indies.

During the Indonesian National Revolution (1945-1949), the university played an important role in the struggle for independence. Many students and faculty members participated in the revolution, and the university campus was a site of several important battles.

After the Indonesian National Revolution, the university was renamed Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia). The university continued to grow and expand in the years that followed, and new faculties were added regularly.

In 1950, the university moved its main campus to Depok, West Java. The new campus was designed to be a modern and self-contained educational community.

Today, UI is one of the leading universities in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of fields. The university has a strong research focus, and is home to several leading research centers.
