The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is a national research university located in Bandung, Indonesia.
The history of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) can be traced back to the early 20th century, when the Dutch colonial government established the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THB) on July 3, 1920. THB was the first engineering school in Indonesia and one of the few universities in Southeast Asia at the time.
The establishment of THB was largely driven by the need for skilled engineers to support the Dutch colonial government's ambitious development plans for Indonesia. At the time, Indonesia was a major producer of natural resources, such as oil, rubber, and tin, and the Dutch colonial government was eager to develop these resources and industrialize the country.
THB quickly gained a reputation for its high academic standards and its rigorous curriculum. The school attracted some of the best students from all over Indonesia, and its graduates were highly sought-after by employers in both the public and private sectors.
After Indonesian independence in 1945, THB was renamed the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The university continued to grow and develop in the years that followed, and it soon became one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, Bandung Institute of Technology is positioned as the #281 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Indonesia.
