University of Delhi

The University of Delhi is a central university located in Delhi, India.

The University of Delhi was established in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. It was initially conceived as a unitary, teaching and residential university. However, it soon developed into a teaching and affiliating body, with jurisdiction over numerous colleges scattered throughout the metropolitan area of Greater Delhi.

The university was founded on the recommendations of the Sadler Commission, which was appointed by the British government in 1917 to review the state of education in India. The commission recommended that a university be established in Delhi to cater to the educational needs of the growing city and to provide a center for higher education for the whole of India.

The university was inaugurated on October 1, 1922, by Lord Hardinge of Penshurst, the Viceroy of India. At that time, the university had only three colleges: St. Stephen's College, Hindu College, and Zakir Husain Delhi College. The university also had a few departments of its own, including the Department of English, the Department of History, and the Department of Mathematics.

Over the years, the university has expanded rapidly and now has over 70 constituent colleges and departments, as well as a number of affiliated colleges.

DU has also been at the forefront of many social and political movements in India. In the 1930s and 1940s, DU students were actively involved in the Indian independence movement. In the 1970s and 1980s, DU students were at the forefront of the anti-Emergency movement and the Indian democracy movement.

DU is a vibrant and diverse university community with students from all over India and the world. It is a great place to learn and grow, and to prepare for a successful career.
