The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) was founded in 1958 with assistance from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and funds contributed by the Soviet Union. It was the second Indian Institute of Technology to be established, after IIT Kharagpur. The planning for IIT Bombay began in 1957, and the first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1958. The institute was initially located in a temporary campus at Matunga, but it was moved to its permanent campus in Powai in 1961.

IIT Bombay has grown rapidly over the years, and it is now one of the largest and most prestigious engineering institutes in the world.
