The University of Pécs (UP) is one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary.
The University of Pécs was founded in 1367 by King Louis the Great of Hungary. It is the oldest university in Hungary and one of the oldest in Central Europe. The university was originally closed in 1541 during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, but it was reopened in 1696.
In the centuries since its founding, the University of Pécs has played a major role in the development of education and culture in Hungary. The university has produced many notable alumni, including scientists, artists, writers, and politicians.
The university experienced a period of rapid growth in the early 20th century. In 1912, the Royal Hungarian Elizabeth University was moved to Pécs from Bratislava. In 1921, the university was renamed the Janus Pannonius University of Pécs.
During World War II, the University of Pécs was occupied by the German army. The university was reopened after the war, and it continued to grow and develop. In 2000, the Janus Pannonius University of Pécs merged with the Medical University of Pécs and the Gyula Illyés Teacher Training College in Szekszárd to form the University of Pécs.
Today, the University of Pécs is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Hungary.
