Budapest University of Technology and Economics

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is a public research university located in Budapest, Hungary.

The history of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) can be traced back to 1735, when the "Berg-Schola," the world's first institute of technology, was founded in Selmecbánya, Kingdom of Hungary (today Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia). Many members of the first teaching staff of BME arrived from Selmecbánya.

In 1782, the Institutum Geometricum was founded in Buda, the capital of Hungary. This institution was the first in Europe to train engineers at university level. In 1850, the Institutum Geometricum merged with the Joseph Institute of Technology to form the Joseph Polytechnics.

The Joseph Polytechnics played a major role in the industrialization process of Hungary in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The institution trained many of the engineers and scientists who were responsible for building Hungary's railways, bridges, and factories.

In 1934, the Joseph Polytechnics was reorganized as the Palatine Joseph University of Technology and Economics. After World War II, the university was renamed the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

BME has continued to grow and develop in the postwar period. BME has also become a leading research university, with its faculty members conducting research in a wide range of fields. Today, BME is one of the most prestigious universities of technology and economics in Europe.
