Francisco Marroquín University

The Universidad Francisco Marroquín (UFM), also known as the Francisco Marroquín University, is a private, secular university located in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The Universidad Francisco Marroquín, or UFM, emerged from a seed of intellectual freedom planted in 1959 by Manuel F. Ayau, affectionately known as "Muso." He established the Center for Economic and Social Sciences (CEES), a think tank nurturing classical liberal ideas in Guatemala. This incubator sparked the creation of UFM in 1971, named after Bishop Francisco Marroquín, an early champion of indigenous rights, though not aligned with his specific philosophies.

UFM blossomed into a haven for libertarian thought, embracing the mission of fostering a society built on the principles of individual liberty, ethical responsibility, and a free market.

This bold approach quickly catapulted UFM to the forefront of Guatemalan academia. It consistently ranks among the top universities in the region, and its alumni – including former ministers, prominent business leaders, and human rights advocates – leave a significant mark on the nation's landscape.

With its main campus in Guatemala City, UFM's reach extends further. A satellite campus in Madrid, Spain, fuels cross-cultural learning, while a new one under construction in Panama City expands its impact. This growing network reflects UFM's commitment to shaping not just Guatemala, but the broader Latin American and global dialogue.

From a single seed of intellectual curiosity, UFM has grown into a towering tree, providing shade for critical thinking, fostering responsible individuals, and enriching the academic landscape of Guatemala and beyond. Its ongoing story promises to be one of continued innovation and unwavering dedication to the ideals of liberty and responsible freedom.
