The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) was established in September 1992 as a University College under PNDC Law 322. The main aim of UEW was to train teachers for the education system of Ghana. However, over the years, the university has expanded its scope to offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in education, the arts, sciences, and business.
In 2004, the University of Education Act, Act 672 was enacted to upgrade the status of the University College of Education of Winneba to the status of a full University. This made UEW the first public university in Ghana to be dedicated solely to teacher education. UEW is also a leading research institution in Ghana. The university has a number of research centers and institutes, including the Centre for Teacher Development, the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration, and the Institute for Research and Innovation. UEW researchers have published extensively in international journals and conferences.
