University of Cape Coast is a public collegiate university located in Cape Coast, Ghana.
Born in 1962, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) wasn't always the independent powerhouse it is today. Nestled in the coastal city of Cape Coast, it first emerged as a University College, partnered with the established University of Ghana, Legon. Its mission? To tackle a critical need: nurturing highly skilled educators for a blossoming Ghana. Starting with just two departments - Arts and Science - UCC quickly bloomed. By 1963, these departments blossomed into faculties, soon joined by Education and Economics & Social Studies (now the Faculty of Social Sciences). This expansion reflected UCC's growing ambition and its dedication to diverse fields of knowledge.
In 1971, history turned a page. UCC shed its "college" status and proudly took its place as a fully independent university, able to award its own degrees and chart its own destiny. This independence fueled further growth, leading to the establishment of six prestigious colleges and schools: Humanities and Social Sciences, Education Studies, Science, Business, Agriculture, and Law. From its humble beginnings as a teacher-training college to its current status as a leading center of academic excellence, UCC's story is one of constant evolution and unwavering commitment to serving Ghana and the wider world. It's a testament to the transformative power of education and a beacon of hope for future generations.
