University for Development Studies

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is a public university located in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region of Ghana.

The history of the University for Development Studies (UDS) can be traced back to the early 1990s, when the Government of Ghana decided to establish a new university in the Northern Region to accelerate the development of the region. The University was established by the PNDC Law 279, which was gazetted on 15th May, 1992. UDS is the fifth public university to be established by Ghana's Government.

UDS began academic work in September 1993 with the admission of its first batch of forty (40) students into the Faculty of Agriculture (FoA). The University has since grown to become one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Ghana. UDS currently has four campuses, located in Tamale, Wa, Nyankpala, and Kintampo.

UDS was established with a clear mission to promote development in the Northern Region and other parts of Ghana. The University's pedagogical philosophy is based on the belief that universities should play a more active role in addressing societal problems. UDS's programs are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive contribution to the development of their communities.

UDS has made significant contributions to the development of Ghana's northern regions.
