Regional Maritime University

Regional Maritime University is a private university located in Accra, Ghana.

The university's history traces back to 1958, when it was originally established as the Ghana Nautical College. The primary objective of the institution was to train ratings for the State Shipping Corporation, which played a crucial role in the country’s maritime industry at the time. This focus on practical and specialized maritime education laid the foundation for the institution’s long-term mission of promoting expertise and professionalism in the maritime sector. Over the years, the college became a vital center for producing skilled personnel who contributed to the growth of the maritime industry in Ghana.

In 1982, the Ghana Nautical College underwent a significant transformation when it became the Regional Maritime Academy (RMA). This change was the result of a collaborative effort among five West African nations: Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The goal of the transformation was to promote regional cooperation within the maritime industry and offer specialized training programs that would support the growth and development of the industry across the region. The RMA became a key institution for maritime education in West Africa, attracting students from the member countries and beyond.

By 2007, the Regional Maritime Academy achieved a major milestone in its evolution by being granted full university status. This transition marked a pivotal moment in the institution’s history, elevating its academic standing and broadening its scope to offer more diverse and advanced educational programs. With this new status, the university aimed to not only serve the maritime industry but also contribute to the wider academic landscape, offering degrees in various disciplines related to maritime and transportation sectors.

The university was officially launched as a full-fledged institution by then-President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, in a ceremony that celebrated its new status and the expanded educational offerings. This development reinforced the institution’s role as a leader in maritime education and its commitment to preparing graduates for successful careers in the maritime and transport industries. Today, the university continues to play a vital role in the region, providing high-quality education and training to students from across West Africa and beyond, contributing to the development of the maritime sector in the region.
