Regional Maritime University is a private university located in Accra, Ghana.
The university was established in 1958 as the Ghana Nautical College, which was primarily aimed at training ratings for the State Shipping Corporation, an important maritime entity in the country at that time. This practically oriented, specialized maritime training laid the groundwork for the institution's enduring mission of enhancing competence and professionalism within the maritime realm. Throughout the years, the college became an important pillar in producing skilled manpower for the extension of the maritime industry in Ghana. In 1982, it was rebranded to the Regional Maritime Academy (RMA), courtesy of the efforts of five West African countries, namely: Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The rebranding was to promote regional cooperation in the maritime field and to provide specialized training adding to the development of the industry regionally. The RMA developed into a prominent maritime educational institution in West Africa, whose students primarily came from the member states and the distant lands.
The Regional Maritime Academy accomplished its most significant milestone when it gained full university status in 2007. The leap was a turning point in the academic institution's history, enhancing its academic quality and extending the levels of education it could provide. With the new quest for university status, the desire was to serve not simply the maritime industry but to make contributions to the greater academic domain by issuing degrees in all different lines of fields relative to the maritime and transportation industries. President Kufoor launched the full University into the authority with a colorful ceremony marking the new status and expanded educational offerings. That development further cemented its position as a leader in maritime education and its commitment to producing graduates well qualified to pursue careers in the maritime and transport industries. Today, the university continues to play a vital role in the region. Giving West African - and beyond - students quality education and training ADN contributing to all parts of the maritime sector development in the region.
