The history of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) dates back to 1951, when it was founded as the Kumasi College of Technology. The college was established with the aim of providing training in science and technology to Ghanaians, and to help meet the country's growing need for skilled workers in these fields.

In its early years, the Kumasi College of Technology offered a limited number of programs in engineering and science. However, the college rapidly expanded in the 1960s and 1970s, and by the early 1980s it was offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In 1961, the Kumasi College of Technology was upgraded to a full university and renamed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in honor of Kwame Nkrumah, the first prime minister and later president of Ghana.

Since its founding, KNUST has played a leading role in the development of science and technology in Ghana and Africa. The university has produced a number of notable alumni, including former Ghanaian presidents and vice presidents, as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs.
