Dresden University of Technology

Dresden University of Technology represents one of the largest and most active higher educational institutions in Germany. The university maintains its membership in the prestigious TU9 alliance which includes Germany's top technical universities and has received the status of a "University of Excellence" according to the German government's Excellence Strategy. The university exists as the central institution of the "Dresden-concept" research alliance which connects academic research with renowned non-university research organizations. The institution now functions as a complete institution which offers multiple academic programs to students and scholars from around the world.

The university started when the Saxon Technical School opened its doors in 1828 to deliver specialized education during the Industrial Revolution's highest point. The institution transformed into a Technische Hochschule through multiple changes between its time as a royal polytechnic school and its final transformation in 1890. The institution established itself as a research center which attracted leading scientists, including Johann Andreas Schubert who created Germany's first operational steam locomotive. The university experienced substantial growth after German reunification in 1990 when it incorporated all independent medical colleges and forestry colleges and transport sciences colleges, which transformed it into a full-fledged university with diverse academic programs.
