The Polytechnic Institute of Paris (IP Paris) is a public technological university located in Palaiseau, France. It was founded in 2019. It is a merger of five engineering grande écoles: École Polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris, and Télécom SudParis.
The history of IP Paris can be traced back to the founding of École Polytechnique in 1794. École Polytechnique was established during the French Revolution as a school to train military engineers and scientists. It quickly became one of the most prestigious engineering schools in the world, and its alumni have included many notable scientists and engineers, including five Nobel Prize winners and two Fields Medalists.
In the 20th century, École Polytechnique and the other four engineering schools that now make up IP Paris began to expand their focus beyond military engineering to include other fields such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. In 1972, École Polytechnique admitted its first female students.
In 2017, the French government announced that it would be creating a second university pole in Paris-Saclay, which would split away from Paris-Saclay University and regroup the engineering schools. This new pole was initially called "NewUni", and became the Polytechnic Institute of Paris in February 2019.
IP Paris is a relatively new institution, but it has quickly become one of the leading technological universities in the world. It is known for its rigorous academic programs, its world-class faculty, and its strong connections to industry. IP Paris graduates are highly sought-after by employers around the world.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Polytechnic Institute of Paris is positioned as the #46 top university in the world, which makes it the #2 top university in France. The university's global rank decreased by 8 points from last year.
