Henri Poincaré University

Henri Poincaré University, also known as Nancy 1, was a public research university located in Nancy, France.

The institution's story is one of both deep historical roots and modern reinvention.  Its origins lie in the late 16th century, specifically 1572, when it was founded in a prominent city in northeastern France as a Jesuit college.  For centuries, it functioned primarily as a center for classical education, evolving slowly alongside the changing intellectual currents of France.  The 18th century saw the curriculum broaden, incorporating scientific and liberal arts, reflecting Enlightenment ideals.  However, the French Revolution brought significant disruption, impacting the institution's operations. The 19th century witnessed a resurgence, particularly after the establishment of the French Third Republic.  A renewed focus on scientific research and higher education allowed the institution to specialize, notably in mathematics, physics, and related scientific disciplines. Its historical buildings and established departments now form a significant part of the new university.
