The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) is a public university located in Jyväskylä, Finland.
The history of the University of Jyväskylä can be traced back to 1863, when the first Finnish-language teacher training college was founded in the city. The college was established by Uno Cygnaeus, a Finnish educator who is credited with laying the foundation for the Finnish public education system.
The teacher training college was initially known as the Jyväskylä Seminary. In 1934, it was renamed the Jyväskylä College of Education. In 1966, the college was granted university status, and it was renamed the University of Jyväskylä.
The university has grown significantly since its founding.
The university is also a major center for research. JYU is home to several research centers and institutes, including the Finnish Centre for Language and Communication Studies, the Centre for International Mobility and Cooperation, and the Centre for Environmental Studies.
