Mekelle University is a public research university situated in the city of Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia.
It was established in 2000 and has grown to become one of the youngest and fastest-growing universities in Ethiopia. Mekelle University is committed to delivering high-quality education and research opportunities for its students while promoting socio-economic development and sustainable growth in Ethiopia and the wider region. The university has different faculties, schools, and institutes that offer undergraduate and graduate programs in varied fields including business, engineering, medicine, social sciences, agriculture, and law. Mekelle University also places great emphasis on research and innovation, and has established different research centers and institutes focusing on critical issues such as climate change, energy, health and food security. Mekelle University's history can be traced back to the early 1990s with the establishment of the Arid Zone Agricultural College in Mekelle. The college was originally located near Selekleka, which is situated in western Tigray, but because of the civil war in Ethiopia, it was later relocated in Mekelle. In 1993, the new Faculty of Science and Technology, which was established at the same campus as the Arid Zone Agricultural College, was integrated with the college. Combined, these two faculties established Mekelle University College. In 1999, Mekelle University College changed status from a college to a university authorized by the Ethiopian government. Mekelle University has grown tremendously since then, and now has a range of undergraduate and graduate programs covering many disciplines. Mekelle University has been a key contributor to the development of Tigray Region, supplying the region with many of its leaders, scientists, and professionals. Mekelle University has also very actively researched agriculture and climatic change issues and other areas of concern for Tigray region. Mekelle University has a bright future.
