Mekelle University is a public research university located in the city of Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. 

Established in 2000, it is one of the youngest and fastest-growing universities in Ethiopia. The history of Mekelle University dates back to the early 1990s, when the Arid Zone Agricultural College was established in Mekelle. The college was originally located near Selekleka, in northwestern Tigray, but was moved to Mekelle due to the civil war that was raging in Ethiopia at the time. In 1993, the Arid Zone Agricultural College was joined by the Faculty of Science and Technology, which had been established at the same campus. Together, these two faculties formed Mekelle University College.

In 1999, Mekelle University College was granted full university status by the Ethiopian government. The university has since grown rapidly, and now offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines. Mekelle University has played an important role in the development of Tigray Region. The university has produced many of the region's leaders, scientists, and professionals. The university has also been at the forefront of research on agriculture, climate change, and other issues that are important to Tigray. Mekelle University has a bright future ahead of it.
