The history of Mekelle University dates back to the early 1990s, when the Arid Zone Agricultural College was established in Mekelle. The college was originally located near Selekleka, in northwestern Tigray, but was moved to Mekelle due to the civil war that was raging in Ethiopia at the time.

In 1993, the Arid Zone Agricultural College was joined by the Faculty of Science and Technology, which had been established at the same campus. Together, these two faculties formed Mekelle University College.

In 1999, Mekelle University College was granted full university status by the Ethiopian government. The university has since grown rapidly, and now offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.

Mekelle University has played an important role in the development of Tigray Region. The university has produced many of the region's leaders, scientists, and professionals.
