Ethiopia's quest for agricultural self-sufficiency took root in 1952 with the establishment of the Jimma Agricultural Technical School. Partnering with Oklahoma State University, this school nurtured skilled professionals to tackle regional agricultural challenges. Over the years, it blossomed into the Jimma Institute of Agriculture (JIA) in 1968, signifying a broader focus on agricultural education and research.

Recognizing the critical need for qualified healthcare professionals, Ethiopia saw the birth of the Jimma Institute of Health Sciences in 1983.
