Dire Dawa University is a public university located in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.
The university in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, was established in 2006 as part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Higher Education to expand access to higher education across the country. It was one of thirteen new universities founded during this period to address the growing demand for higher learning. The university began with an enrollment of 754 students, offering programs in three key faculties: Natural Science and Mathematics, Social Science and Language, and Business and Economics. With thirteen undergraduate programs and a faculty of 90 teachers supported by 103 administrative staff, the university set out to provide quality education to its students from the outset.
In 2008, the university took a significant step in its development by merging with an affiliate campus of Haramaya University. This merger brought about the construction of additional buildings, workshops, and improved infrastructure, which enabled the university to accommodate a growing student population. The expanded campus provided the space and resources needed to enhance the academic experience and allowed the institution to broaden its range of academic offerings. As a result, the university’s influence and capacity for educating students from the region significantly increased.
In line with Ethiopia’s economic priorities, the university continued to evolve and adapt to the needs of the modern economy. In 2017, it established the Institute of Technology, which focuses on industry-led economic transition. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to providing relevant education that aligns with the economic needs of the region and the country as a whole. The Institute of Technology aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to Ethiopia’s industrial development and broader economic growth.
Today, the university in Dire Dawa stands as a prominent institution of higher learning in the region. Through its continuous expansion, strategic partnerships, and emphasis on technology and industry-driven education, the university plays a pivotal role in the academic and economic development of Ethiopia. Its programs are designed not only to foster academic excellence but also to prepare students for careers that contribute to the country’s advancement in various sectors.
