Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) is a public research university in Tallinn, Estonia. It is the only technological university in Estonia and also the most international university in the country.
The history of Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) dates back to 17 September 1918, when the Estonian Technical Society, which united local technical intellectuals, started to organise special technical courses in Estonia, which was occupied by German forces at that time.
On 25 October 1918, the Estonian State Assembly passed a resolution to establish a state technical school. On 15 November 1918, the Estonian Provisional Government issued a decree establishing the Tallinn Technical School. The school opened its doors on 22 November 1918, with 123 students enrolled.
In 1920, the Tallinn Technical School was renamed the Tallinn Higher Technical School. In 1934, the school was renamed the Tallinn Technical Institute. In 1940, after Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, the institute was renamed the Tallinna Polütehniline Instituut (Tallinn Polytechnic Institute, TPI).
After Estonia regained its independence in 1991, TPI was renamed Tallinn University of Technology. The university has continued to grow and develop since then, and it is now one of the leading technical universities in Northern Europe.
