The American University in Cairo is a private, independent, non-profit university in Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest American university outside of the United States and is one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East.
The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded in 1919 by the American Mission in Egypt, a Protestant mission sponsored by the United Presbyterian Church of North America. The university's founding president, Charles A. Watson, envisioned AUC as a bridge between the East and the West, offering a liberal arts education in the English language to students from all over the Middle East.
AUC's first classes were held in Khairy Pasha Palace, a historic building in the heart of Cairo. The university quickly grew and expanded, and in 1938 it moved to its current campus in New Cairo.
AUC has played an important role in Egyptian history and culture. In the early years of the republic, AUC was a training ground for many of Egypt's future leaders. The university has also been a center for intellectual and artistic activity, and its alumni include some of Egypt's most prominent writers, artists, and scholars.
AUC has also been a pioneer in international education. In 1960, AUC became the first university in the Middle East to be accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. AUC also offers a variety of study abroad programs and has partnerships with universities all over the world.
AUC is a vibrant and dynamic university with a rich history and a bright future. The university is committed to providing its students with a world-class education and to preparing them for success in a globalized world.
