Cairo University is the second-oldest institution of higher education in Egypt, after Al-Azhar University.
The history of Cairo University dates back to 1908, when it was founded as a private institution called the Egyptian University. The university was founded by a committee of private citizens with royal patronage, and its early founding and location made it a model for later universities throughout the Arab world.
In 1925, King Fuad I took over the university and transformed it into a major state institution, with colleges of arts, science, law, and engineering. The university was renamed King Fuad I University in 1940, and Cairo University in 1954.
