Alexandria University (AU) is a public university in Alexandria, Egypt.
The history of Alexandria University dates back to 1938, when it was established as a satellite of Fouad University (the name of which was later changed to Cairo University). At the time, it had only two faculties: Arts and Law. The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1941.
In 1942, Alexandria University became an independent institution and was renamed Farouk University, after the then-reigning King Farouk I. However, after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, the university was renamed the University of Alexandria.
Alexandria University has played a major role in the development of Egypt and the Arab world. It has produced many distinguished alumni, including Nobel laureates, heads of state, and business leaders. AU is also a leading center of research and innovation.
