University of Cuenca

The University of Cuenca (Spanish: Universidad de Cuenca) is an Ecuadorian public university located in Cuenca, Ecuador.

The University of Cuenca was founded in 1867, under the presidency of Jerónimo Carrión y Palacio, under the name of University Corporation of Azuay and the faculties of Jurisprudence, of Medicine and Pharmacy, of Philosophy and Literature and of Theology. His first rector was the Ecuadorian lawyer and politician Benigno Malo.

The university was established in response to the growing demand for higher education in southern Ecuador. Prior to its founding, the only university in Ecuador was located in Quito, the capital. The University of Cuenca was designed to provide a more accessible and affordable option for students in the southern part of the country.

The university's early years were challenging. It faced financial difficulties and a shortage of qualified faculty. However, the university persevered and gradually grew in size and reputation. By the end of the 19th century, the University of Cuenca was one of the leading universities in Ecuador.

In the 20th century, the University of Cuenca continued to grow and expand its academic offerings. In the 1960s, the university underwent a major reform that transformed it into a modern, research-intensive institution. The university also established new campuses in the cities of Azogues and Cañar.
