The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) was founded in 1538 as the University of Santo Tomás de Aquino, making it the oldest university in the Americas. It was originally affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, but its religious ties were severed in the early 19th century. The university was reorganized in 1914 and renamed the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
