University of Nicosia

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) is a private, for-profit university located in Nicosia, Cyprus. It is the largest university in Cyprus by student population.

The history of the University of Nicosia (UNIC) can be traced back to 1980, when Intercollege was founded as a private institution preparing students for the examinations of recognised British professional bodies, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Communication, Advertising and Marketing Foundation (CAM).

In 1981, Dr Nicos Peristianis, the present President of the Council of the University of Nicosia, was appointed Director and the College began expanding its programmes towards academic degrees. In 1983, Intercollege was officially recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus as a private college offering business and computer science programs.

Intercollege continued to grow throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and by the early 2000s it was one of the largest private colleges in Cyprus. In 2007, Intercollege was granted university status by the Government of Cyprus, and it became the University of Nicosia.

UNIC is a member of the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). It is also accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions (CAHEI) in Cyprus.
