University of Cyprus

University of Cyprus is a public research university established in Cyprus in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cypriot people, and is well placed to fulfil the numerous aspirations of the country.

The idea of a university in Cyprus was first mooted in the 1960s, but it was not until after the Turkish invasion of 1974 that the idea was seriously pursued. In 1977, the government of Cyprus appointed a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a university. The committee's report, which was published in 1979, recommended that a university be established in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.

In 1983, the government of Cyprus passed a law establishing the University of Cyprus. The law provided for the university to be a public institution, governed by a council of twelve members. The council is appointed by the President of Cyprus and includes representatives of the government, the academic community, and the business sector.

The University of Cyprus admitted its first students in 1992. The university initially offered undergraduate programs in eight faculties: Arts and Humanities, Business and Public Administration, Education, Engineering and Technology, Health Sciences, Law, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.
