Xi'an Shiyou University

Xi'an Shiyou University, also known as Xi'an Petroleum University, is a multi-disciplinary university in Xi'an, China.

This prominent university, established in 1951, boasts a rich history intertwined with the development of China's petroleum industry. Originally founded as the Northwest Petroleum Technical School, it catered to the nation's urgent need for skilled professionals in this burgeoning sector following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Recognizing the growing importance of the field, the school saw a significant upgrade in 1958, transforming into the Xi'an Petroleum Institute. This period marked a surge in petroleum exploration and production, and the institute played a crucial role in equipping the workforce with the necessary expertise. 

However, the university's path wasn't without its challenges. In 1969, amidst broader social and political movements, the institute faced a temporary closure and was converted into a factory. This period of disruption lasted for over a decade, highlighting the turbulent times China experienced. Fortunately, in 1980, the institute reopened its doors as Xi'an Petroleum Institute, signifying a renewed focus on education and research in petroleum science.

The late 20th century witnessed a period of significant growth and development for the university. By 2000, it transitioned from being solely under the purview of the China National Petroleum Corporation to a co-management structure involving the central and local governments, with the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government taking the lead. This shift broadened the university's scope and resources. Finally, in 2003, reflecting its expanded academic offerings beyond petroleum engineering, the institute officially adopted its current name - Xi'an Shiyou University (or Xi'an Petroleum University).

The university boasts three vibrant campuses: Yanta, Mingde (South), and Huyi. Each campus fosters a unique learning environment, but they all contribute to the university's energetic atmosphere.
