This esteemed university's history stretches back to 1902, when it first sprouted as the Western Learning School within the Shanxi Grand Academy, making it one of the earliest universities established in China. Throughout its journey, it has undergone numerous transformations. In its initial years, it served as the engineering department of Shanxi University. By 1953, it gained independence and became the Taiyuan Institute of Technology under the direct administration of the Ministry of Higher Education. However, in 1962, the reins were handed back to Shanxi Province. The year 1984 marked another milestone as it earned the official title of Taiyuan University of Technology.

A significant expansion occurred in 1997 when the Shanxi Institute of Mining, founded in 1958, merged with the university, solidifying its position as a leading institution in engineering and related fields. This merger further solidified its reputation as a powerhouse in engineering and related fields. Recognition for its excellence came in the form of inclusion in the prestigious "211 Project" – a national initiative to cultivate key universities. More recently, it achieved the distinguished status of being part of the national "Double First-Class" project, highlighting its standing as a world-class university.
