The roots of this esteemed university stretch back to 1902, when it was established as the Western Learning School of the Shanxi Grand Academy. This institution holds the distinction of being one of the earliest universities in China's modern higher education system. It became the Engineering Department of Shanxi Grand University, then the School of Engineering of Shanxi University.
In 1952, a significant turning point arrived with the establishment of the Shanxi Provincial School of Mechanical Manufacturing Industry. This marked a shift towards a more specialized focus on technical training, catering to the burgeoning mechanical manufacturing industry in China. Recognizing its potential, the government soon elevated it to the national level in 1953, renaming it the Taiyuan Machinery Manufacturing School under the First Ministry of Machinery Industry.
