University of Yaounde II

University of Yaoundé II is a public university located in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The university's history traces back to the establishment of the Federal University of Yaoundé in 1962. This marked the beginning of higher education in Cameroon. The institution played a pivotal role in shaping the country's intellectual landscape and producing a new generation of scholars and professionals. In 1972, following a reorganization of the country, the university dropped the "Federal" from its name, becoming simply the University of Yaoundé. It continued to expand and evolve, offering a wide range of programs in various disciplines.

By the early 1990s, the university had grown significantly, leading to challenges in administration and resource allocation. In response, the government decided to split the University of Yaoundé into two separate institutions. This decision was based on the branch-model pioneered by the University of Paris, aiming to improve efficiency and enhance academic focus. In 1993, the university was officially divided into the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II. The latter was established with a focus on social sciences, humanities, and communication. It inherited several faculties and institutes from the original university, including the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, and the Higher School of Information and Communication Sciences and Techniques.

Since its establishment, the university has continued to play a vital role in Cameroon's higher education system. It has expanded its programs, improved its infrastructure, and strengthened its research capabilities. Today, it stands as one of the most prestigious universities in the country, contributing significantly to national development through teaching, research, and community engagement.
