University of Buea

University of Buea is a public university in Buea, Cameroon. It is the only English-speaking university in the predominantly French-speaking Central African region.

The history of the University of Buea can be traced back to 1979, when the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) was established. ASTI was a bilingual institution that offered training in translation and interpretation, as well as other language-related programs. In 1985, ASTI was renamed the University Centre of Buea (CUB). CUB offered a wider range of programs, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the arts, sciences, and business.

In 1993, CUB was upgraded to the University of Buea. This was part of a wider reform of higher education in Cameroon, which saw the creation of several new universities. Since its founding, the University of Buea has grown rapidly. In 1992/93, the university had just 768 students. By 1999/2000, the student population had grown to over 4,700. The University of Buea is now one of the most prestigious universities in Cameroon. It is known for its academic excellence and its commitment to social responsibility.
