Open Institute

OI is a non-governmental organization, and it is dedicated to improving the results of early-grade education in Cambodia.

The Open Institute (OI) was founded in 2001 by a group of Cambodian educators who were concerned about the quality of education in Cambodia. The OI was founded with the mission to standardize the way the Khmer language was used in computers. This was an important task, as there was no standard way to type Khmer on computers, which made it difficult for Cambodians to access information and communicate online. The OI worked with the Cambodian government and other stakeholders to develop a standard Khmer keyboard layout and to promote the use of Khmer fonts and software. The OI also developed a number of Khmer language resources, such as online dictionaries and tutorials.

In 2007, the OI started the Open Schools Program, a joint initiative with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to use ICT to improve the quality of education in Cambodia. The Open Schools Program provided schools with computers and internet access, and it trained teachers on how to use ICT in the classroom.

The Open Schools Program also developed a number of educational resources, such as online courses and interactive lessons. The OI also worked with the Ministry of Education to develop a national ICT curriculum for schools.

In 2017, the OI shifted its mission from technology to education, making the development and dissemination of teaching and learning materials for early-grade education (grades 1 to 3) its main reason for existence.

The OI is a leading organization in Cambodia in the field of early-grade education. It is known for its innovative programs and resources, and it has played a significant role in improving the quality of education for thousands of Cambodian children.

The OI's history is a story of innovation and dedication. The OI has overcome many challenges to achieve its mission of improving the quality of education for Cambodian children. The OI is a valuable asset to Cambodia, and it is making a significant contribution to the country's development.
