The 2iE International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering boasts a relatively young but impactful history, marked by visionary ideas and consistent growth.

In 1998, the concept of 2iE emerged in response to the critical need for highly skilled engineers in Africa, particularly focusing on water and environmental challenges. Founding members from Burkina Faso, France, Canada, and Switzerland collaborate to develop a plan.

In 2002, 2iE was officially established as a non-profit association with a unique public-private partnership model. Burkina Faso grants a Headquarters Agreement, offering 2iE a privileged status as a diplomatic enclave and facilitating international collaboration.

In 2004, the first academic programs start, offering Master's degrees in Water Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Research activities also launch, tackling issues like sanitation, irrigation, and renewable energy.

Continuing Impact: 2iE today stands as a prominent institution with a global reach. It educates future leaders in water, environment, and related fields, conducts cutting-edge research, and contributes to sustainable development in Africa. The institute continuously seeks new partnerships and initiatives to amplify its impact.
