Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) is Brunei's second university and the first national Islamic university.
The history of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) in Brunei dates back to 2004, when His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah announced his intention to establish a second university in Brunei, with a focus on Islamic studies. In 2005, the Sultan established the Royal Committee on the Establishment of the Islamic University of Brunei, which was tasked with developing a plan for the new university.
The committee's report was submitted to the Sultan in 2006, and in 2007, UNISSA was officially established. The university's first batch of students enrolled in September 2008.
UNISSA was named after Sultan Sharif Ali, the third Sultan of Brunei. Sultan Sharif Ali was a descendant of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, and he is known for his efforts to promote Islam in Brunei.
UNISSA's mission is to provide its students with a high-quality education that is grounded in Islamic values and to contribute to the development of Brunei and the wider Muslim world.
UNISSA has a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Islamic Studies and Research, the Institute of Business Administration, and the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
