Federal University of Paraná

The Federal University of Paraná (Universidade Federal do Paraná, UFPR) is a public university headquartered in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

The history of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) dates back to 1892, when José Francisco da Rocha Pombo, an intellectual of the state of Paraná, initiated the construction of the university. However, his project was frustrated by the Federalist Movement.

In 1912, the University of Paraná was founded, but it was short-lived due to the outbreak of World War I. In 1915, the university was split into several colleges. In 1951, the colleges were reunited and the university became a free public institution. In 1959, the university became federalized and was renamed the Federal University of Paraná.

Throughout its history, UFPR has been a pioneer in many areas. In 1919, UFPR was one of the first universities in Brazil to offer a course in engineering. In 1930, UFPR was the first university in Brazil to offer a course in medicine. In 1951, UFPR was the first university in Brazil to offer a course in law.

UFPR has also been a leading institution in research. In 1960, UFPR established the first postgraduate program in Brazil. In 1970, UFPR established the first research center in Brazil. UFPR's research has had a significant impact on the development of the state of Paraná and Brazil as a whole.

UFPR is also a leader in internationalization. In 1975, UFPR established the first international office in Brazil. In 1980, UFPR offered its first exchange program.
