University of Sarajevo

The University of Sarajevo (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian: Univerzitet u Sarajevu / Sveučilište u Sarajevu / Универзитет у Сарајеву) is a public university located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the largest and oldest university in the country.

The history of the University of Sarajevo dates back to 1537, when the Gazi Husrev-bey madrasa was founded. The madrasa was a center of Islamic learning, and it offered a wide range of courses in theology, philosophy, science, and literature.

In 1887, the Austro-Hungarian authorities established a secular high school in Sarajevo. The high school offered a curriculum that was based on the European model.

After World War I, Sarajevo became the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1920, the University of Sarajevo was founded. The university initially had four faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

In the 1930s, the university expanded rapidly. New faculties were opened, including the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Faculty of Economics.

During World War II, Sarajevo was occupied by the Axis forces. The university was closed, and many of its faculty members were imprisoned or killed.

After the war, the university was reopened. In the following decades, the university continued to grow and expand. New faculties were opened, and the student population increased significantly.

During the Bosnian War of 1992-1995, the university was heavily shelled and damaged. However, the university continued to operate throughout the war, and it played a vital role in maintaining the city's cultural and intellectual life.

Today, the University of Sarajevo is a leading institution of higher education in the Balkans. It is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education and to contributing to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
