University of Abomey-Calavi

University of Abomey-Calavi is the principal public university in Benin, located in the city of Abomey-Calavi in the south of the country.

The history of the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC) dates back to 1962, when the Institut d'Enseignement supérieur du Bénin (Higher Education Institute of Benin) was established in Cotonou. This institute offered a limited number of programs in law, economics, and the humanities. In 1970, the institute was upgraded to university status and renamed the Université du Dahomey. The new university offered a wider range of programs, including medicine, engineering, and agriculture.

In 2001, the university took its current name, the University of Abomey-Calavi. This name change was intended to reflect the university's location in the city of Abomey-Calavi, which is a suburb of Cotonou.
